Migraine Headaches

A migraine headache is one of the most common types of identified headaches. Migraine headaches are extremely painful and can make day-to-day tasks unbearable. Pain pills such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen will not do much to nullify the pain.

A person suffering from a migraine headache will have certain identifying symptoms such as:

  • Extreme sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Constant dripping from the eyes.
  • Feeling unbalanced or dizzy.
  • Difficulty seeing clearly
  • Redness in the eyes
  • Increased irritability
  • Sickness to stomach
  • Possible vomiting
  • Bowel issues

Most of the time, these symptoms will appear before the headache occurs (or is detectable by the sufferer). Under normal circumstances, these headaches will last for a few days. Most suffers report pain in the temples, behind the eyes and in the neck area.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are another type of headache, similar in symptoms to the migraine headache. Sufferers report that they feel an “instant” intense pain in the sinus area and moving behind the eyes. Most sufferers define the pain as throbbing and extremely painful.

Cluster headaches are commonly referred to as such because they show up in clusters. Under normal circumstances, these headaches will come and go quickly, without any real warning or reason. They tend to occur in multiple, hence the name cluster.

So, why do headaches ache? The head has certain pain-sensitive receptors that respond when certain nerves, veins and tissue become inflamed. When these receptors “light up”, we feel pain. Stress can cause blood vessels to restrict, which can cause the same reaction.

Back To Migraine Headaches

There are type classifications of a migraine headache: classical and common. A classical migraine headache is one that occurs after an event such as numbness in the body or a tingling sensation (i.e. foot feel asleep) as the blood rushes through the body. A common migraine does not follow any specific event and can be brought out without any warning. For the most part, common migraines occur three times more often than classical migraines.

More than 28 million Americans suffer with migraine headaches each year, without any type of treatment. In the past, scientists thought that migraines were caused by restricted blood vessels. However, after using more sophisticated imaging tools, they believe that migraines are caused by excitable nerve cells.

More research has shown that migraines come after a bout of CSD, Cortical Spreading Depression. What happens is the cortical area has a sudden burst of activity, and then the activity just stops. During this time, the brain becomes “depressed” and then you have migraine pain.

Understanding all of this, I use a different approach to preventing migraine headaches. I use a neurological test to determine where the nervous system is not responding properly. As I am one of the only doctors using this method, I am constantly seeing more and more migraine headache sufferers each week … well, they were sufferers.
